What’s new?

It’s a new year. The writer of Ecclesiastes says there is “nothing new under the sun” (Ecc. 1:9). But I found all these new things mentioned in scripture:

  • A new song: “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God” (Ps. 40:3)

  • A new thing: “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Is. 43:19).
  • A new covenant: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah” (Jer. 31:31).
  • New mercy: “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lam. 3:22,23).
  • A new commandment: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another” (John 13:34).
  • A new creation: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Cor. 5:17).
  • A new self: “and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph. 4:24).
  • A new and living way: “the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh” (Hebrews 10:20).
  • A new name: “To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it” (Rev. 2:10).
  • And eventually, a new heaven and a new earth: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Rev. 21:1-4).

These are just a few discussion starters in case someone asks, “So, what’s new?” Take a moment today to thank God for all your new blessings in this new year!
